Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at kdupuis@deliritek.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Delirium is an altered state of consciousness, characterized by episodes of confusion than can develop over hours or days.  Patients with delirium have lost their connection to reality.  They may not know where they are, who they are, or when they are.  While Delirium can be frightening for the patient and family, it is typically temporary.

Risk factors include being older, undergoing an operation with general anesthesia, experiencing pain, dehydration, and having even a mild form of pre-existing dementia.

If an older loved one will undergo a major surgery, here is how you can help during recovery:

  • Help them stay connected with who, where, and when they are
  • Make sure they are wearing their glasses and hearing aids
  • Bring in pictures and small items from home
  • Spend all day, every day, in your patient's hospital room, speaking with them and keeping them oriented to who, where, and when they are
